Quordle Strategy: How to Solve Four Wordles Simultaneously

Quordle is Wordle times four. Here's the strategy framework that will help you solve all four boards without running out of guesses.

How Quordle Differs from Wordle

Quordle presents four five-letter word puzzles simultaneously. Every guess you type applies to all four boards at once. You have nine guesses to solve all four. Each board is independent โ€” a green letter on Board 1 says nothing about Board 2's answer โ€” but every guess must "count" across all four.

The mechanical rules are identical to Wordle per board. Green = right letter, right position. Yellow = right letter, wrong position. Gray = letter not in this word.

The key difference from Wordle is the scarcity of guesses relative to information needed. In Wordle, 6 guesses for 1 word gives you plenty of room. In Quordle, 9 guesses for 4 words is surprisingly tight.

Why Wordle Strategy Doesn't Transfer Directly

The optimal Wordle strategy involves using your first 2-3 guesses to probe letter frequency, then narrowing to the answer. This works because you have one board and 6 guesses.

In Quordle, you can't afford to "spend" three guesses on pure information gathering for boards that may be easily solvable. You need every guess to potentially solve at least one board while also providing information for others.

The core tension: solving one board early (in 3-4 guesses) frees you to focus on the remaining three, but if that "early solve" approach uses guesses inefficiently for the other boards, you'll run out.

The Information-Maximizing Approach

The best Quordle openers are words that provide broad letter coverage across all 26 letters rather than the highest single-board entropy.

The two-opener strategy: Use your first two guesses as pure information plays โ€” words that together cover 10 different high-frequency letters โ€” before starting to narrow any individual board.

Recommended pair: CRANE + LOUSY

  • CRANE: C, R, A, N, E (5 top-10 frequency letters)
  • LOUSY: L, O, U, S, Y (5 more top-frequency letters)
  • Together these 10 letters cover the most common consonants and vowels in the Wordle word pool.

After two guesses, you have color information for all 10 of these letters across all 4 boards. Typically, 3 or 4 boards will have 3+ confirmed letters, making each solvable in 1-2 more guesses.

How to Prioritize Which Board to Solve First

After your information openers, scan all four boards and rank them by "how close to solved."

Solve the most constrained board first. If Board 3 has 4 green letters (only one unknown position), solve it next with certainty. The guess that solves Board 3 will also provide information to Boards 1, 2, and 4 simultaneously.

Don't abandon boards. A common mistake is getting excited about one nearly-solved board and ignoring the others. Guess 5 is too late to start gathering first information on a board where all 5 letters are gray.

Flag boards where all letters are still gray. After 2 information openers, if one board has 0 matches (all gray), that board contains only letters outside your 10-letter opening set. Note which letters you haven't used yet and prioritize them in your next guess.

    When to Switch Between Boards

The board-switching decision is Quordle's most complex tactical moment. General rule: switch boards whenever the current board has fewer than 2 unknown positions but another board has many unknowns.

    Specific triggers to switch:

  • Current board is solved (obviously)
  • Current board is down to 2-3 candidates, all of which share the same letter in the unknown position (meaning your next guess can solve both this board and probe another)
  • Another board has gone 3+ guesses with no green tiles yet
  • Managing the Shared Guess Pool

Nine guesses sounds like a lot. It isn't. Here's the math: if you use 2 openers, then average 2 guesses to solve each of the 4 boards, that's 2 + 8 = 10 guesses. You've already exceeded your limit.

The path to success: guesses 3-9 must be efficient across multiple boards. The ideal guess solves one board AND provides useful (ideally green or yellow) information to at least one other board.

This requires looking at all four boards before each guess and identifying words that satisfy constraints on multiple boards simultaneously.

    Common Traps

Trap 1: Ignoring a "silent" board. One board shows only gray tiles through guess 4. It's easy to mentally deprioritize it. But it needs solving, and you have fewer guesses left than you realize.

Trap 2: Playing too narrow too soon. After opener 1 gives you 2 greens on Board 2, the temptation is to immediately narrow to Board 2 candidates. Resist this until after opener 2. The information from guess 2 may tell you the answer is obvious.

Trap 3: Forgetting letter positions across boards. A yellow A on Board 1 means A is in the word but not in position 3 (say). On Board 3, A might be green in position 3. These are independent constraints. Track them carefully.

Best Starting Word Pairs for Quordle

  • CRANE + LOUSY โ€” the classic information pair
  • SLATE + CORNY โ€” S, L, A, T, E, C, O, R, N, Y
  • ADIEU + STORY โ€” maximum vowel coverage first (A, I, E, U, O), then top consonants (S, T, O, R, Y)
  • STARE + CLOWN โ€” S, T, A, R, E, C, L, O, W, N
  • Any pair that covers 10 different high-frequency letters works well.
